I wrote this really awesome blog post. Like, super clever, funny, introspective. Man, it was awesome. And then I accidentally deleted it. So now you are stuck with this crappy blog post. What a bummer.
I have to admit, the panic has really been setting in about whether I am actually going to have enough food for you guys. If I could transmit worries into plant growth, I would have the most spectacular harvest ever. Unfortunately, worry does not get me very far. So I'll just have to try planting stuff and see how that goes instead.
Carrots are the bane of my garden---they are about the wimpiest germinators *ever*. I have put in 3 plantings so far, with the hope that each planting would get me through 3-4 weeks of harvesting, but I have to say, I'm a little skeptical. The seeds are spaced 1.25" apart--but the plants are certainly not. Katy thinks I will end up buying bags of baby carrots at the grocery store and handing those out. So if the carrots are suspiciously perfect, you will know what has happened.
The beans are coming up nicely! This is the first planting I did. The second planting is just popping up from the ground now.
The peas are coming along pretty nicely too! Sugar snap peas are one of the few vegetables my eldest child will voluntarily eat. I used to think that toddlers would grow out of their picky-food stage....but this stage has lasted right through to 17 years old. Maybe 18 will be better? I have to admit, I'm losing hope.
Lettuce is actually looking like lettuce--although it's a little on the tiny side. How do you feel about tiny lettuce heads?
But never fear Josh! The kale is growing spectacularly well, tucked under it's row cover to keep it safe from insects. You will have *plenty* of kale. You can sleep well now.
The radishes and turnips are coming up like champs! So I sure hope you guys like radishes and turnips! I hear some people like tomatoes, so I got a bunch of those planted out into the hoop house. And the peppers have been transplanted as well. So I think it's safe to say there *will* be food at some point, but will there be food June 18th?? I guess we will find out soon enough.
