Unfortunately, due to the nice, long, soaking rain we had last Saturday (which was wonderful in most respects), most of the cantaloupes that were close to ripe, split. I debated long and hard about whether to give you guys some damaged fruit, and after taste-testing, I decided to go ahead and pass out the least damaged ones. Most of them will just need a small portion tossed in the compost heap. And frankly, i couldn't possibly make use of all of them at home, and a lot of them would end up as chicken feed if I didn't give them to you. So, my apologies for the damaged melons, but I am hoping you can make use out of most of them.
The cucumbers continue to struggle along under the assault of cucumber beetles, so we have a few more cucumbers this week. I just transplanted some new plants (protected under row cover). Hopefully those will get a head start on the dang beetles and churn out a steady supply of cucumbers in a month or so.
In this weeks share: beans, blackberries/strawberries (for some), carrots, chard (for the greens folks), cucumbers (for some), garlic, lettuce mix, melons (cantaloupe or honey dew, for some), pepper (Hungarian Hot Wax), summer squash (of course), tomatoes (both cherry and others), and baby turnips.
